A new zine takes down Whine Problem
There is debate around whether or not the Forest City Satire’s entire existance has been for the purpose of destroying Whine Problem’s status as London’s favourite queer band. Since Gabi & the Whats? disbanded last year, Whine Problem has filled the void with their potent attitude and intoxicating stage presence. Their popularity was earned as they released Sleem this past Valentine’s day, and then immediately embarked on a provincial tour with support from Sam Hansell. While Whine Problem was masterminded by Emrys Bordeau, Lee Goldaline-Place is the guitarist, the best songwriter (in my opinion), backup vocalist, and sexual assaulter. Lee has since come to regret the act, and is supported by their new partner and the rest of Whine Problem. Regardless, the public sides with the victim and so Whine Problem has taken an indefinite hiatus that I do not anticipate they will return from.
For transparency, I was involved with Whine Problem quite intimately (as the audio engineer), and I found out about this story at the same time as the rest of the public. Despite this, I visited Lee when they were on suicide watch at Victoria Hospital to show my support as a friend, and because I had been in the same place. When I realized that Lee actually had far more support than I’d ever expected an assaulter to have, I began to understand how the end of Whine Problem was the right thing. While I am still unable to support the victim (because I never knew her–she is anonymous), I can at least say that the Forest City Satire zine was far more effective at creating positive social change than Whine Problem ever was.
